Patrick Ching

I was born in Hawaii in 1962, and have spent much of my life teaching people about nature through my art. My most influential artistic mentors were the late Herb Kawainui Kane and surrealist painter John Pitre.

After volunteering for many wildlife organizations, I eventually became a ranger for the US Fish and Wildlife Service at the Kilauea lighthouse on Kauai. I also lived for extended periods of time among sea turtles and monk seals on the remote North Western Hawaiian Islands.

In 1984, I wrote my first coloring book on Hawaiian animals, and the success of that and similar books launched my publishing career. I have since authored many award-winning books including Sea Turtles of Hawaii, and The Hawaiian Monk Seal. My latest book entitled “Honu and Hina” was illustrated with the help of many children, parents, and teachers. It received the Hawaii Book Publisher’s association’s “Ka Palapala Po’okela” award for excellence in children’s literature.

I now live in Hanalei, Kauai, and own the Patrick Ching Art gallery in Princeville Center. I travel internationally doing art projects, painting workshops, and live painting shows to raise money and awareness for various wildlife protection organizations.

I also have my own television show, Patrick Ching’s Painting In Paradise that runs daily on OC16 TV throughout the state of Hawaii.

Being on the Advisory Board of Sea Inspiration helps me share my love for the marine environment, fulfill my mission in life to help people express their inner artist, and make the world a more beautiful place.
